Earlier this month, Carter turned 100 years old, becoming the first former president in US history to reach that age. He has been battling cancer since 2015 and is currently receiving hospice care.
Jimmy Carter was President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He is also a recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize.
He served two terms as Governor of Georgia, from 1971 to 1975.
Born and raised in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Naval Academy. He served seven years as a submarine officer in the Pacific and Atlantic Fleets of the U.S. Navy, leaving the military after the death of his father in 1953.
Carter's tenure saw improvements to the U.S. Social Security system, but it also saw significant tax increases. On the international stage, he helped negotiate the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt and the Panama Canal Agreement.
In the November 1980 presidential election, Carter ran for a second term but lost to Republican Ronald Reagan.
