The cargo ship Rubymar, which the Houthis attacked in February, sank in the Red Sea. Due to the leakage of oil products, an environmental disaster is possible there.

This is written by Reuters with reference to the Yemeni government.

It is noted that the ship sank the night before, resulting in a possible environmental disaster in the southern part of the Red Sea.

What is known about the wreck of the Rubymar

The American Central Command reported that more than 41 thousand tons of fertilizer were transported on board the Rubymar before the attack.

In addition, the US military claimed that the ship suffered significant damage as a result of the Houthi attack, causing an 18-mile (about 29 km) oil slick to form in the sea.

If the sinking of the ship is confirmed, it will be the first since November, when the Houthis began attacking commercial ships.

Recall that since October 2023, the Houthis have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman. Such attacks endanger the lives of civilians on ships and are a violation of freedom and the right of transit passage in the straits.

On January 12, US and British troops, supported by Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, successfully hit a number of targets used by Houthi rebels in Yemen to eliminate the threat to shipping.
