The story of a man who “ate his friend” was captured by a director who visited a “cannibal tribe”.

Michael Rockefeller is perhaps the most famous example of people who got too close to cannibals, as his whereabouts remain unknown since his disappearance in 1961. There is a theory that he joined the tribe, while others believe that he was killed the second time he came into contact with them.
The son of former US Vice President Nelson Rockefeller was not the only explorer of the world interested in tribes that adhere to ancient rituals, as many others have contacted these groups to gain a deeper understanding of their beliefs.
In July 2006, researchers traveled to West Papua, the very place where Michael Rockefeller disappeared, to speak with some of the last cannibals believed to be alive.
Known as the Korowai, they have lived by the same customs for 10,000 years and show no signs of changing. The province is located in the extreme east of Indonesia, on the west coast of the island of New Guinea.
Here, directors from Journeyman Pictures decided to learn more about their customs, adding documentaries about the most intriguing topics in the world to their repertoire.
The tribe believes that when someone dies, they hunt down those “possessed” by evil spirits to kill and eat them, and no one is safe: a six-year-old boy was under suspicion after the sudden death of his parents, as his uncle confessed that he might be killed when he reaches puberty.
But during a conversation with one of the tribe members, the director asked if he knew him before he killed him, to which he coldly replied, “Yes, he was my friend and part of my family. It's okay. I don't feel sad or anything.”
But the horror didn't end there: that same night, a fellow tribesman brought the director the skull of one of the people he had killed and eaten, because shortly before his cousin's death, he had told him that the man was a “sorcerer” possessed by an evil spirit.
Following tradition, he killed and ate his cousin after his death, and kept the skull as a trophy for the murder he is most proud of.
Recall that the man wrote a “scary letter” to his family before his killed by cannibal tribe. John Allen Chau was killed by the Sentinelese tribe in 2018.
