In Canada, the new Chief of Defense Staff will be a woman. This is the first such case in the history of the country.

Lieutenant General Janie Carignan has been appointed Chief of the Defense Staff of Canada. She is the first woman to command the Canadian Armed Forces, the source said. Karignan's appointment will likely be officially announced on July 2.

What is known about Karignan

Karignan previously headed the Canadian Armed Forces' Department of Professional Conduct and Etiquette, which works to change the culture within the military.

In 1986, she joined the War College, and in 2016 became the first female combat general.

Karignan served in the Golan Heights located between Israel and Syria, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Afghanistan. At the same time, she held a number of leadership positions in the army, in particular, she was the head of the operations department at the General Staff.
