In conversation with 24 ChannelProfessor at King's College London Lawrence Friedman explained whether the change in British Prime Minister will affect support for Ukraine. It is worth noting that in 2023, Keir Starmer came to Kyiv and promised Ukraine “unwavering support” from his party.

Is it worth it worry Ukraine

Great Britain is approaching elections. The fact is that on May 22, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dissolved the government. He subsequently announced that he had received consent from the monarch, Charles III, to hold early parliamentary elections. The elections will take place on July 4.

It will be strange if we get a different prime minister than Keir Starmer. I don’t think there will be any changes in British policy (regarding Ukraine – Channel 24). This is a completely bipartisan issue. Ukraine should not worry, it will continue to be supported, Lawrence Friedman emphasized.

What you need to know about Keir Starmer

This is a British lawyer and politician, leader of the Labor Party, shadow minister for exiting the European Union (since 2016). According to the latest opinion polls, Labor is expected to beat the Conservatives in the election by a significant margin. Therefore, it is highly likely that Keir Starmer will become the new prime minister instead of Rishi Sunash. Recently, the politician promised that if he wins the elections, he will continue to support Ukraine. Starmer added that Labor would also continue to support the creation of a special tribunal to bring Russia to justice. In addition, Starmer's party supports the confiscation of Russian assets and their use to help Ukraine.

Possible new Foreign Secretary David Lammy and likely Defense Secretary John Gealey recently visited Kyiv and expressed support for Ukraine. Therefore, most likely, Great Britain, even with a new government, will be a constant ally of Ukraine.
