Brazil will not supply Ukraine with shells for Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns. President Lula da Silva offered to mediate the negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow.

In 2022, Berlin already asked Brazil to transfer shells for Gepard anti-aircraft missile systems, which Ukraine uses in the war against Russia. The country even then refused to provide them.

Brazil will not provide Ukraine with ammunition for Gepard

The President of Brazil proposed mediation between Kyiv and Moscow with the involvement of Chinese leader Xi Jinping in the initiative. According to him, it is necessary to create a group of countries that are strong and important enough to sit down at the negotiating table with both sides of the war.

Lula da Silva noted that he had already discussed this with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron. He plans to visit China in March.

In addition, the Brazilian president said that his country would not supply Ukraine with shells for Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, which were transferred by Germany. Scholz, who paid an official visit to Brazil, asked for such supplies.

Lula da Silva evaded direct condemnation of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. He only noted that Moscow “made a classic mistake” by attacking the territory of another country, thereby committing “wrong”. According to the Brazilian leader, the real causes of “the conflict seem not so obvious to him.”

Brazil refuses to participate in sanctions against Russia and supply weapons

Although Brazil has condemned Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine at the UN, for economic reasons it maintains a position of neutrality and refuses to take part in sanctions against Russia and its President Vladimir Putin.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also rejected the request of the German government to supply ammunition for Leopard 1 tanks. Berlin wanted to transfer them to Ukraine.

The then commander of the Brazilian army, Julio Cesar de Arruda, offered to sell Germany ammunition, provided that our state does not receive them. The President said that “it is not worth provoking the Russians” and declined the request.

Reference. The Rhinemetall Concern is ready to transfer 88 tanks to Kyiv, as well as Leopard tanks after repairs. However, now the main problem is the shortage of shells. Brazil is one of the few countries that is armed with these tanks and ammunition. Together with her in this list – Chile, Greece and Turkey.
