Borrell hopes for oil embargo agreement before EU summit

EU may agree on Russian oil embargo/Channel 24 Collage

Heads of member states may decide on an oil embargo ahead of the EU summit. This assumption was made by Josep Borrell.

He stressed that the sixth package of sanctions should be adopted. And its most important point is the oil embargo against Russia.

Decisions must be made unanimously

We need to take decision unanimously. Yesterday afternoon, and also this morning, there were difficult negotiations, Josep Borrell stressed on the France Info TV channel.

He also noted that today (May 30 – Channel 24) the EU member states will be able to come to an agreement. And this means that soon the sanctions stranglehold around Russia may drag on even tighter.

Recall that on Sunday the countries that are part of the European Union could not come to an agreement. At the same time, the representatives had a desire to reach a common denominator on the embargo on oil from the aggressor countries on the eve of the EU summit.

Hungary will not interfere

On the air, Borrell was asked if he was considering removing the embargo clause from the next sanctions package. In particular, because Hungary cannot decide what it wants to get instead of its “Yes” vote. Borrell responded categorically.

No, I don't think so… in the end there will be a deal, he stressed.

It was possible to come to a certain agreement thanks to a number of manipulations and edits. So, until the end of the year Russia will not be able to supply its oil to the EU countries until the end of 2022.At the same time, it will have the opportunity to do this thanks to the Druzhba oil pipeline. It is through him that Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic receive oil from the aggressor country.

This decision made it possible to take into account the needs of each EU member. Thus, these three states, which consume between 7 and 8% of Russian oil, will have “additional time to adjust”.

  • Radio Liberty journalist Rikard Jozwiak emphasized that the new project received another edit. In it, the European Council calls for speeding up consideration of the “temporary exception for crude oil supplied by the pipeline.”
  • Earlier, Jozwiak noted that the lack of agreement concerns not only the oil embargo and the position of Hungary. As it turned out, some states are striving for Russian citizens to continue buying property in the EU.
  • Political scientist Petr Oleshchuk expressed his own opinion about Hungary. He noted that the EU is really being led to attempts to blackmail him. And the worst thing is that this negatively affects not only the situation in Ukraine, but also in the entire union.
