by alex

A bill designed to prevent a partial shutdown of the US government has passed a procedural hurdle in the Senate.

This was reported by Reuters.

The document would give senators more time to pass a $1.59 trillion spending bill for the new fiscal year, which began October 1, 2023.

The Senate voted 68 in favor and 13 against to begin debate on the stopgap funding bill. The House of Representatives will consider the document soon.

The bill extends funding for government agencies, but sets two new expiration dates: money for agriculture, food, transportation, housing, energy, military construction and veterans programs, which expired on Friday, will be extended until March 1.

Appropriations for the remaining departments, including Defense, Homeland Security and the State Department, which were set to expire on February 2, will be extended through March 8.

Recall that funding for some federal departments, in particular the Ministry of Transport, ends on January 19.

December 7 The Senate failed a procedural vote to begin work on a document to provide about $106 billion in emergency aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, as requested by President Joe Biden.
