After the meeting with Vladimir Zelensky, the US President called on Congress to approve funding for Ukraine before the holidays. Senate Republicans believe this is unlikely to happen by Christmas.

On December 12, Joe Biden held a closed meeting with Zelensky. As a result of these negotiations, the US President once again asked congressmen not to delay in adopting an additional aid package for allies, in particular Ukraine.

“Don't give a gift to Putin”

Biden, in his address to the American parliament, emphasized that if Congress does not approve funding for supplies to Ukraine before the winter holidays, Putin will receive the best gift for the holidays.

The Russian dictator hopes to take advantage contradictions between Republicans and Democrats in order to leave Ukraine without support. So Biden stressed that members of Congress must “do the right thing.”

No funding until Christmas

The leader of the Republicans in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, said that even if the two parties manage to reach a consensus, it is almost impossible to pass an aid package to Ukraine by Christmas.

This (acceptance of funding for Ukraine – Channel 24) is almost impossible – even if we reach an agreement – to develop, pass through the Senate, get to the House of Representatives by Christmas, – the politician said.

McConnell noted that Republicans will not compromise unless Biden meets their demands to limit migrants crossing the US-Mexico border.

No agreement will be until Joe Biden and the Republicans reach an agreement,” added McConnell.

US Aid to Ukraine under threat: what is known

  • In the fall, President Biden proposed that Congress pass an additional aid package to the allies with an estimate of 106 billion dollars (then it grew to 110). Of these, $61 billion was supposed to go to Ukraine.
  • However, Republicans in the House of Representatives did not support the idea of a joint aid package.
  • As of now, Congress has not yet passed the presidential bill.
  • The Biden administration is concerned because the funds provided to support Kiev are expiring, and there is no new funding for Ukraine.
  • December 6, the US President called on Congress to approve funding for assistance to Ukraine, drawing attention to the fact that without it our state will not be able to withstand the pressure of the aggressor, and Putin will not stop and may attack NATO member countries.
  • However, this speech by Biden has not yet changed the situation. The Senate (where Republicans are in the minority) blocked consideration of the bill. This happened allegedly due to contradictions between Republicans and Democrats regarding the “wall” on the border with Mexico.
  • Whether Congress approves funding for Ukraine will determine whether the United States can continue supply our state with funds.
