Current US President Joe Biden in an address to the nation on his decision not to seek a second term, explained the reasons for his decision.
It should be noted that Biden gave a speech on the evening of July 24 in the Oval Office of the White House. In it, the head of the United States said that he decided to sacrifice personal ambitions for the sake of unity in his political force.
Biden's Address to the Nation
Joe Biden addressed the nation with an 11-minute speech. It was his first address since the politician had to isolate himself after he was diagnosed with coronavirus and after he announced his withdrawal from the race.
According to him, in recent weeks he realized that he must unite his party. He noted that he thinks his presidential experience, his leadership role in the world, his vision for the future of America – all of this was worth a second term.
But nothing should stand in the way when it comes to saving our democracy. And personal ambitions too. So I decided that the best solution is to pass the torch to a new generation. This is the best way to unite the country, – Joe Biden said.
He emphasized that being the president of the United States was the honor of his life. “But to protect the democracy that is at stake, and that is more important than any title… The wonderful thing about America is that it is not ruled by kings and dictators. It is decided by the people. History is in your hands, the idea of America is in your hands,” he emphasized.
In addition, Biden also expressed support for the candidacy of Deputy Prime Minister Kamala Harris.
“She is experienced. She is persistent. She is capable. She has been a great partner to me and a great leader of our country… The choice is yours, the American people,” Biden noted.
Note that US presidents traditionally give speeches from the Oval Office in crisis situations or to make very important announcements. In fact, for Biden, this is the fourth such address in his term.
