President Joe Biden arrived in Germany on June 25. Together with the leaders of other countries that are allies of the United States, he will attend the G7 summit,
The meeting will discuss the next steps in countering Russian aggression, as well as a number of global economic and environmental issues. The first talks are scheduled for June 26.
What is known about Biden's visit
On June 25, the US President flew from Washington to Munich, and then arrived by helicopter to the venue of the G7 summit – to Elmau Castle.
On June 26, Biden will meet with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. They will also be joined by other G7 leaders from the UK, Canada, France, Italy and Japan.
It is known that the summit will be held at Elmau Castle in the Bavarian Alps. After that, the G7 leaders will travel to Madrid for a NATO summit.
Both meetings will take place against the backdrop of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as a global spike in inflation, the threat of a recession and a growing problem from China threatening Taiwan.
< p>Joe Biden has received widespread support for renewing US leadership in European and Asian alliances. The response to the Russian threat, in particular, has demonstrated strong transatlantic unity both in military assistance to Ukraine and in imposing economic sanctions against Moscow.
However, the US president, like several European leaders, is facing domestic pressure from -for the consequences of the sanctions that provoked a sharp increase in fuel prices.
The G7 will discuss the Marshall Plan for Ukraine
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz recalled his visit to the destroyed Irpen and noted that what he saw reminded him German cities after World War II. Like Europe at the time, Ukraine needs a Marshall Plan for its recovery, he noted.
Regarding recovery, Scholz explained that:
- Many billions of euros and dollars will be needed, as well as it will take years;
- besides funding, an agreement on how such a Marshall plan for Ukraine will look like will be decisive;
- how it will be coordinated at the international level;
- and what investments will most quickly move Ukraine on its European path.
