The self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko instructed the Minister of Natural Resources to search for oil in the country. This idea is not new. Lukashenko has been dreaming of oil independence for years.

Belarusian oppositionist and deputy chairman of the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus Pavel Latushko told 24 Channel that Lukashenko has repeatedly returned to his reign on the topic of oil production in Belarus. He noted that finding oil for the self-proclaimed president would be a strategic success.

Oil production in Belarus

Pavel Latushko noted that Lukashenko has repeatedly set the task for the ministers of natural resources of Belarus to search for oil. They couldn’t find her, so ministers were dismissed from their positions.

Lukashenko believes that during the Soviet Union, large volumes of oil were pumped out of the territory of Belarus, which does not allow us to now have this resource as an element of energy security, he said.

According to , Belarus needs approximately 8 million tons of oil per year for its own needs. Now in the Gomel region 1.8 tons are mined per year. For Belarus, this process is quite expensive, so it is unprofitable, but production is happening.

Lukashenko demands that this oil be found. “He believes that a miracle will happen, oil will be found and Belarus will become more independent,” said the oppositionist.

Pavel Latushko believes that it is very good for the interests of the country to extract oil on its territory in sufficient volumes, at least for his own needs.

But from the point of view of strengthening the regime, Lukashenko will have an energy factor to support his power, – he emphasized.
