Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton took third and fourth place. Thanks to the points they scored, the Scuderia was able to overtake Mercedes in the Constructors' Cup.
Before the start of the race, the drivers went on a warm-up lap, while Williams driver Carlos Sainz did not move, which was reminiscent of a scene from F1: The Movie, which was released this week. The Spaniard was eventually scheduled to start from the pit lane, but the start was delayed by 15 minutes.
Sainz complained about the brakes as he entered the pit lane and at some point his car caught fire. The Williams team put out the flames and towed the car to the pits.
After a second warm-up lap, the race started and immediately on the first lap, reigning Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen and Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli retired after a collision. The Italian apologised for the collision, explaining that his brakes had locked up.
On lap 16, another Williams driver, Alex Albon, ended the race early.
In addition to the four clear leaders who broke away from the others during the race, Mercedes driver George Russell, Liam Lawson with the Racing Bulls, Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin, two Sauber drivers – Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg, and Esteban Ocon in the Haas – also finished in the points.
