Australia supported limiting Russia's veto power and called for reform of the UN Security Council

Australia supported the demand of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to deprive Russia of its veto power in the United Nations Security Council and called for further reform of this governing body.

This was reported by Bloomberg with reference to the speech of Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong at UN General Assembly.

— We must demand more from permanent members, including limits on the use of veto power. Russia mocks the UN daily as it continues its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine, — Wong said.

On Wednesday, Zelensky told members of the UN Security Council that Moscow's ability to veto initiatives made it impossible for the body to adequately respond to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

— We must ensure greater permanent and non-permanent representation for Africa, Latin America and Asia, including permanent seats for India and Japan, — Wong said.

Australia is seeking a seat on the Security Council for 2029-2030, she said.

Wong added that tensions in the South China Sea and North Korea's continued nuclear development weapons are among the issues that are creating the most confrontational environment in decades and require greater commitment to conflict prevention.
