Attacked a 12-year-old girl who was collecting money for the Armed Forces of Ukraine: a man was convicted in Kyiv

A 48-year-old man who attacked a 12-year-old girl on Khreshchatyk was convicted in Kyiv. A minor child and his friends collected money in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, in September 2022, a man noticed a group of teenagers on Khreshchatyk Street. They played musical instruments, collecting donations for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. When the children finished their performance, they put the money they collected into the schoolgirl’s backpack.

The man followed the children, and when he caught up with the 12-year-old girl, he grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground and pulled her about 2 m, trying to take away her backpack. Concerned passers-by intervened in the situation and detained the attacker until law enforcement officers arrived.

The man admitted his guilt only partially during the trial. He claimed that he did not intend to rob the child or use violence against him.

However, the prosecutor's office noted that all the evidence from the prosecution indicated an intention to commit an attack, and the man was only trying to avoid responsibility for the crime. The court found the citizen's testimony to be untenable under these circumstances.

In the Shevchenkovsky District Court of Kiev, a 48-year-old native of the Poltava region was found guilty of trying to rob a young child (part 3 of article 15, part 4 of article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The man was sentenced to six years and eight months in prison. Now the attacker is in a pre-trial detention center. Until the verdict comes into force, the preventive measure chosen for the accused in the form of detention in custody was left unchanged.
