At 2 Ukrainian nuclear power plants recorded the echo of the earthquake in Turkey

by alex

Seismic monitoring systems recorded tremors at two Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Energoatom explained what power they were.

President of Energoatom Petr Kotin said that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants were designed taking into account the seismic activity of the region. He also said how strong earthquakes they can withstand.

What is known about shocks at nuclear power plants

Earthquake echo in Turkey and other regions of the world felt in Ukraine. Minor tremors were recorded by the seismic monitoring systems of the Khmelnitsky and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants, Energoatom said.

They explained that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants have equipment that captures the tremors of the earth's crust in real time.

“In real time, the Main Center for Special Control (GTSSK) monitors and registers any deviations from the norm seismic stability in the area where nuclear power plants are located,” the companies said.

Will our nuclear power plants withstand an earthquake

Petr Kotin said that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants are designed taking into account the seismic activity of the region. That is:

  • when choosing sites for construction, we chose sites where it is most safe;
  • our nuclear power plants are able to withstand earthquakes with a power of up to 7 points.

According to the director of Energoatom, emergency protection of power units is working at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. That is why, at 6 earthquake points, the blocks:

  • immediately stop;
  • transfer to a safe state.

Petr Kotin assured that Energoatom carried out seismic hazard studies taking into account international IAEA recommendations and agreed with the State Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Ukraine. if necessary, additional measures are taken to protect power units, Energoatom assured.

In addition, the company said that they use a scale that takes into account the physical consequences of destruction, and not energy, as on the Richter scale. Therefore, 8 – 9 points recorded in Turkey are equated to 6 – 7 points on the Richter scale.

What is known about the safety of nuclear power plants during an earthquake

  • National Academy of Sciences seismologist Alexander Kendzera explained in an interview with Channel 24 that no one assumes earthquakes in time. However, the specialist assured that the seismic hazard for nuclear power plants was studied in detail.
  • Alexander Kendzera said that it was possible to establish that with the maximum earthquakes that should occur on the territory of our nuclear power plants, not a single nuclear power plant structure will be destroyed.< /li>
  • In addition, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine said that there are risks of an earthquake on the territory of Ukraine, but they are insignificant.
  • Director of the Emergency Response Department of the State Emergency Service Volodymyr Demchuk at a briefing at the Ukraine-Ukrinform Media Center said What to say now that Ukraine is threatened by such large-scale earthquakes as in Turkey, they cannot.
