Seismic monitoring systems recorded tremors at two Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Energoatom explained what power they were.
President of Energoatom Petr Kotin said that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants were designed taking into account the seismic activity of the region. He also said how strong earthquakes they can withstand.
What is known about shocks at nuclear power plants
Earthquake echo in Turkey and other regions of the world felt in Ukraine. Minor tremors were recorded by the seismic monitoring systems of the Khmelnitsky and South Ukrainian nuclear power plants, Energoatom said.
They explained that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants have equipment that captures the tremors of the earth's crust in real time.
“In real time, the Main Center for Special Control (GTSSK) monitors and registers any deviations from the norm seismic stability in the area where nuclear power plants are located,” the companies said.
Will our nuclear power plants withstand an earthquake
Petr Kotin said that all Ukrainian nuclear power plants are designed taking into account the seismic activity of the region. That is:
- when choosing sites for construction, we chose sites where it is most safe;
- our nuclear power plants are able to withstand earthquakes with a power of up to 7 points.
According to the director of Energoatom, emergency protection of power units is working at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. That is why, at 6 earthquake points, the blocks:
- immediately stop;
- transfer to a safe state.
Petr Kotin assured that Energoatom carried out seismic hazard studies taking into account international IAEA recommendations and agreed with the State Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Ukraine. if necessary, additional measures are taken to protect power units, Energoatom assured.
In addition, the company said that they use a scale that takes into account the physical consequences of destruction, and not energy, as on the Richter scale. Therefore, 8 – 9 points recorded in Turkey are equated to 6 – 7 points on the Richter scale.
