The Armed Forces of Ukraine as of March 8, 2023 managed to push the invaders to the right bank of the Bakhmutka River. Ukrainian defenders are not ready to give up.
For Channel 24 , a military expert, a retired colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, pilot-instructor Roman Svitan analyzed the map of hostilities. He told how the Ukrainian fighters manage to keep Bakhmut for a long time.
Armed Forces of Ukraine pushed back the Russians from Bakhmut
Roman Svitan stressed that the Bakhmutka River is not as big as people might imagine.
This is such a stream, so there are no problems with crossing the river. Not in either direction,” he said.
The colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the reserve also noted that our troops are on the right bank of the Bakhmutka River and thereby create a “black hole” for the Russians with an event horizon along the border of the city.
“They enter the city and disappear. This is how our units work. In particular, on the right bank of the Bakhmutka River,” Svitan explained.

How APUs work
According to the military expert, the Armed Forces of Ukraine work from three positions:
- contact fights;
- snipers;
- artillery spotters.
“Sniper pairs lie down and work on the Russians quite successfully. Those weapons that are available are very modern. They see and work far, including at night,” Svitan explained.

He also stressed that artillery fire spotters work very accurately.
They will “lay down” if not from the first shell, then from the second – exactly where it is necessary, – Svitan added.
He concluded that Ukraine holds the right bank of the Bakhmutka River in this area and conducts counterattacks along the entire perimeter of the clash.
The situation in other directions
- The invaders are trying to advance in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdeevsky and Miner directions.
- Also, the enemy offensive was unsuccessful in the areas of Orekhovo-Vasilovka, Dubovo-Vasilovka, Bakhmut, Kamenka, Avdeevka and Maryinka of the Donetsk region. On March 7 alone, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled more than 100 enemy attacks in these directions.
- In the Zaporozhye and Kherson directions, Russia is on the defensive.
