Ukraine asked partners F-18/US Army

On Wednesday, December 6, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense presented at a closed session in Washington list of weapons to meet the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Among the requests were F-18 fighters.

People's Deputy, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security Roman Kostenko on air24 Channelssuggested how partners would react to a request to provide aircraft.

Possible reaction to a request for F-18

The Ukrainian government also requested other weapons:

  • F-16 fighters;
  • AH-64 Apache helicopters;
  • UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters;
  • Abrams tanks;
  • 155mm artillery shells;
  • three types of General Atomics drones (one of them is MQ-9B Sky Guardian);
  • THAAD air defense system;
  • ATACMS long-range missiles;
  • transport aircraft C-17 Globemaster and C-130 Super Hercules.

Kostenko explained that it is extremely difficult to obtain approval from partners for the supply of weapons that are more powerful than infantry fighting vehicles. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense literally “gnawed out” equipment that was already in service with Ukrainian soldiers. The negotiation process is complex and requires a lot of time and explanation.

F-18

Fourth generation carrier-based fighter-bomber. Today it is the main combat aircraft of the US Navy, and its modernized version is exported, in particular, as an airfield aircraft.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, during a recent visit to the United States, thanked American partners for military support . His primary task is to prove to our allies that Ukraine really needs this or that weapon.

Of course these are necessary things (F-18 – Channel 24). However, you should also pay attention to long-range missiles. There are priority things. I don’t think that any transport aircraft are a priority right now. Helicopters, long-range weapons, air defense systems – this is really what will provide an opportunity in a future positional war, if we manage to wrest positions. This will cover our troops and make us more powerful,” Roman Kostenko emphasized.

Help for Ukraine from the USA: the main thing

  • On December 6, the Biden administration announced a new $175 million package of military aid to Ukraine. Specifically, the new aid package includes additional AIM-9M and AIM-7 air defense missiles, additional HIMARS ammunition, 155mm and 105mm artillery ammunition.
  • That same day, President Joe Biden addressed the US Congress on voting for additional funding for Ukraine. He warned that failure to do so could allow Vladimir Putin to regain momentum in the war and even bring in American troops. Biden said he is willing to make “significant compromises” on border security to satisfy Senate Republicans who have refused to support future aid to Ukraine.
  • The situation around the relevant bill has been dragging on since October : Then the administration of US President Joe Biden submitted a request to Congress for the allocation of 106 billion dollars, of which about 61.1 billion are intended for military support to Ukraine. However, Congress has not yet voted for this funding. Some Republicans were skeptical about the idea of providing new aid to Ukraine, while others would like to help only humanitarian aid.
