The first strike near the structure was on 19 July. Then the position of the Russian air defense was eliminated there. Why the destruction of the Antonovsky bridge is necessary for the liberation of Kherson – read in the material of Channel 24.

Why the destruction of the Antonovsky Bridge is necessary

This is a crossing connecting Kherson with the occupied parts of the left bank. On July 20, the British Ministry of Defense intelligence explained that the bridge is extremely important for the logistics of the Russian army. The message emphasized that Russia could make provisions there or withdraw its troops from the territory it occupied to the west of the river.

The lower course of the Dnieper is a natural barrier with a typical waterway width of about a thousand meters. Control over the Dnieper crossings is likely to be a key factor in the outcome of the fighting in the region, British intelligence analysts emphasized.

A military analyst Oleg Zhdanov expressed a similar opinion after the strike on the Antonovsky bridge on July 26. He stressed that the destruction of the Antonovsky bridge “would greatly complicate the logistics of the enemy, which would not allow them to fully feed their groups around Kherson.”

Russian troops can be cut off from supplies

Colonel of the SBU and People's Deputy Roman Kostenko told Real Time that a complete cut-off of troops is indeed possible. However, it is necessary to destroy not only one Antonovsky bridge. Also, 2 other crossings are important transport arteries of the enemy:

  • Railway Antonovsky bridge, which crosses the river 20 kilometers from Kherson and goes to the railway station of the city. (Earlier it became known that it is almost never used to overturn troops due to its close proximity to the front line).
  • Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which the Russians turned into their base. She is also exposed to Ukrainian military equipment from the territory not occupied.

When we cut off the enemy's reserves, all the troops (enemy – channel 24) on the right bank will turn into our “trophies”. We know how many there are. If this grouping remains cut off, it will be difficult for them to hold the line. The advantage will already be on our side,โ€ the colonel summed up.

However, he added that in any case, the decision on all steps is taken by the army command. Therefore, it is impossible to say for sure that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will destroy all bridges across the Dnieper in the southern regions. After all, the Kakhovskaya HPP is located 90 kilometers from Kherson, and even with it, the Russians will have much worse logistics. Kostenko also said that the goal of Ukraine is unchanged – the liberation of all territories. Therefore, our troops will subsequently also need to cross the Dnieper.

the Russians can avenge the strike on the bridge

Expert Oleg Zhdanov urged all Ukrainians not to ignore the alarms in any case. After all, if the destruction of the Antonovsky Bridge is confirmed, the Russians will want to respond in the usual way for them – strikes on peaceful cities.

If the bridge was destroyed or put out of action for a long time, then responses should be expected at night and in the coming days, that is, rocket attacks on civilian targets. Be careful and do not neglect air raid alerts,โ€ Zhdanov urged.
