All about the US elections: how Americans vote and when the results will be out Dmitry Usik

On November 5, 2024, the US will hold presidential elections. The main opponents in the fight for the post of head of the country are Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Despite the fact that other candidates are also participating in the elections, the struggle traditionally unfolds between two camps – Republicans and Democrats. What are the features of voting, when to expect the results and other nuances of the American elections, 24 Channel broadcasts.

Voting in the USA

The US presidential election traditionally takes place on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This time the voting falls on November 5. However, some Americans have the right to vote early – both in person and remotely. In particular, Joe Biden has already taken advantage of the opportunity to vote early.

For example, in North Carolina, absentee ballots for early voting began to be sent out on September 6, and this opportunity was subsequently opened in Alabama and Wisconsin. Early in-person voting also began in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Virginia

Polling stations in the United States will open on November 5 at 5:00-7:00 and will remain open until 18:00-20:00 in different states and in different time zones. After the polls close, the votes will be counted.

How votes are counted in the USA

More than 240 million voters can potentially take part in the US presidential election, and there are no direct presidential elections in the country, meaning that Americans do not vote for a specific candidate (even though his name is on the ballot), but delegate their votes to the electoral college.

Which candidate receives the most votes in a state (Democrat or Republican) will secure all 55 electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis all”.

Thus, the candidate who receives 270 (an absolute majority) of the 538 electoral votes becomes the President of the United States.

There are states in the United States that traditionally vote for Democrats (“blue states”) and for Republicans (“red” states”). Therefore, the voting results depend on the choice of 7 “shaky” states – these are Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia and Arizona.

When will the results be available and when will the candidate become president

The vote counting itself actually takes place online. The voting results in the United States will probably become will be known already on the night of November 6, however, in case of a minimal difference, the counting may be delayed.

If no candidate gains an overwhelming majority (and this is unlikely), then the President of the United States will be determined by the House of Representatives. The Republican Party currently has a majority there. However, there is no need to worry about this, because this has only happened twice in the history of the States – in 1800 and 1824.

However, after the final vote count, candidates have another 2 months to appeal the election results. It is already known that Trump's headquarters are already preparing lawsuits that can be used to appeal the election results. However, most state governors have said they are ready to certify the election results.

The final election results will be certified on January 5, 2024, in Congress. The inauguration will take place approximately two weeks after that. Until then, the current president, Joe Biden, will serve as acting president.
