Air Defense and Ammunition: US Announces New $200 Million Aid Package for Ukraine

The United States has announced a new security assistance package for Ukraine of up to $200 million under the Special Presidential Powers Program.

This was reported by the White website at home. Voice of America reported this earlier, citing the words of White House National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby.

The funds will be provided by under the special presidential powers program.

Security assistance will include air defense assets, HIMARS artillery munitions, mortar rounds, and Javelin anti-tank missiles.

The U.S. Department of Defense is also providing long-term support through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative fund to enhance air defense capabilities, long-range strike capabilities, and anti-tank capabilities.

The Pentagon announced a “significant support package”, using approximately $1.5 billion from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). This assistance includes:

  • NASAMS ammunition;
  • short- and medium-range air defense ammunition;
  • RIM-7 air defense missiles;
  • electronic warfare equipment;
  • HIMARS ammunition;
  • 155mm and 105mm artillery shells;
  • 120 caliber mortar shells mm;
  • Precision-guided air-to-air munitions;
  • TOW optically tracked and wire-guided missiles;
  • Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank missiles;
  • Small arms;
  • Explosives and demolition equipment;
  • Secure communications systems;
  • Satellite imaging services;
  • Spare parts, maintenance and support, and more auxiliary equipment.

The previous package of military aid to Ukraine, totaling $225 million, was announced by US President Joe Biden during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

It included, in particular, a battery of the Patriot air defense system, ammunition for NASAMS and HIMARS, and anti-aircraft missiles for Stinger.
