After the war, the EU will need to learn how to coexist with Russia – Borrell

Borrell agreed with Macron's statement/European Union

The head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that after the peace talks, Russia will not disappear anywhere. Therefore, the EU will have to somehow coexist with it.

Borrell agreed with the statement of French President Emmanuel Macron. He recently stressed that Russia should not be humiliated, because then it will need to be taken out of isolation.

All wars end with negotiations

Borrell said, that before the start of a full-scale war, he had never seen such a unity of the European Union. Of course, the Baltic states, long under the threat of Russian invasion, and Spain or Portugal may have different sensitivity to events in Ukraine.

However, all EU countries finally adopted the 6th package of sanctions against the aggressor country, reducing the import of Russian oil by 90%.

“I do not deal with theology. Our military assistance should go to the Ukrainian troops as soon as possible, because they are fighting not with banknotes, but with guns that allow them to resist Russian aggression,” added the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Borrell noted that all wars end with a ceasefire and negotiations. Ukraine should be able to approach this stage from a position of strength so that Russia can no longer occupy the territory it has seized since February 24.

Borrell supported Macron's statement

The head of EU diplomacy noted, that the goal of the Europeans is to help Ukraine regain the territories it has lost since the beginning of the war. He also recalled Macron's words that Russia should not be humiliated.

Not only Emmanuel Macron speaks about this. This is an expression that translates reality: Russia will continue to exist after the peace talks, and it will be necessary to determine the way in which we intend to coexist with it, Borrell said.

He added that this coexistence will be very difficult after what Russia did in Ukraine.

“This invasion, this aggression, this destruction of Ukraine, we all saw it every evening on television, and I myself saw it on the spot. But we still have to try to coexist with Russians on this continent,” said the head of EU diplomacy.

According to him, the channels of communication with the aggressor country have never been closed. In particular:

  • The Austrian Chancellor was recently in Moscow,
  • The head of the African Union is returning from Sochi,
  • Two representatives of the UN Secretary General were in Russia to try to find a solution for grain exports from Ukraine.

Borrell concluded that negotiations with Russia should continue.
