A full-scale war in Ukraine affects not only people and infrastructure, but also the climate. Frequent fires and military emissions will provoke new meteorological phenomena in our country.

Frequent fires in the South of Ukraine lead to additional emissions of gas-aerosol impurities and soot. Svetlana Boichenko, a climatologist and employee of the Seraphim Subbotin Institute of Geophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, spoke about this.
Environmental impacts are multicomponent. As a result of hostilities, detonation products of rockets and artillery shells are thrown into the atmosphere. Moreover, in certain regions, like the East and South of Ukraine, they are constant and repeated,” Boychenko said.
Further, emissions of gases from aircraft and heavy machinery running on diesel fuel enter the atmosphere. To this are added ground aerosol particles, which are formed from explosions. As a result, harmful compounds can appear in the atmosphere or useful ones can be destroyed.
What new meteorological phenomena can arise
According to climatology, gas-aerosol impurities, combustion products and soil particles can serve as nuclei condensation. This leads to increase in cloudiness, precipitation and the frequency of thunderstorms.
Acidification of precipitation can occur, and then we get acid rain or even black – when the core condensation is soot, and the droplet has a grayish tint. – said Boichenko.
The impact of combustion products lasts from several hours to several weeks. After that, they are washed out of the atmosphere. However, shelling on the territory of Ukraine takes place constantly, so these particles constantly enter the atmosphere. Accordingly, the emission process is delayed for months.
In general, greenhouse gases emitted on the territory of Ukraine can lead to warming.
