BBC journalists said police received a 911 call at 05:10 local time when a young girl said her cousin was “killing members of her family.” This all happened in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens.

Two officers were eventually dispatched to an address on Beach 22nd Street, where they saw a man leaving with luggage. When officers tried to talk to the man, he pulled out a knife, stabbing one officer in the neck and chest and another in the head.

One of the officers was eventually able to draw his weapon and shoot the suspect. When more officers were dispatched to the scene, they found an 11-year-old girl outside the home. She was taken to hospital but later died from her injuries.

After the New York City Fire Department arrived on scene, emergency responders found the bodies of three other people in the home: a 12-year-old boy, a 44-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man. A 61-year-old woman was subsequently found injured and taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds.

Police believe all victims died as a result of stab wounds, and a steak knife was found at the scene. The NYPD considers the suspect to be 39-year-old Courtney Gordon, who was previously arrested for domestic violence in the Bronx.
