A slap in Putin's face: what lies behind the Iran-Russia agreement Alina Vishnevskaya

Russia and Iran signed a strategic partnership agreement on January 17. According to it, the Kremlin and Tehran will not support the aggressor if one of the parties is attacked.

Israeli journalist Emil Shleimovich emphasized to Channel 24 that the Iranians signed some kind of paper with the Russians that does not oblige them to anything.

What is Iran's interest in Russia

Shleimovich noted that Iran has never been an ally of Russia. He remembers very well the Russian invasions that took place in the past. There is a situational partnership between them now, since Tehran is driven into such an economic situation where it needs to survive somehow.

He believes that the Iranians have no desire to get involved in any of Putin's adventures now, if this threatens them with additional sanctions, blockades or something else. Therefore, they signed some kind of paper that does not oblige them to anything.

A slap in Putin's face, but I don't think they are doing this intentionally, the journalist said.

According to him, Iran needs Russia, since it buys military equipment from Tehran. There is also some cooperation between them in the aviation sector.

In addition, he noted, Russia can give loans and then write them off. It is likely that the huge billion-dollar debts are written off by the Kremlin for a certain reward.

But I don’t think they will get involved in a war that is completely foreign and unnecessary to them, – said Shleimovich.

Because, the journalist concluded, the Iranians are not fools and not suicidal.
