A fake calculator has been developed in Ukraine to combat Russian propaganda

by alex

Ukraine has developed an innovative Fake Calculator tool aimed at helping users recognize manipulative content and Russian propaganda.

The Association of Innovative and Digital Education and Media Detector worked on it, with the assistance of the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine and the National Democratic Institute (NDI).

– Ukraine is struggling both on the military and on the information front, so it is extremely important that all Ukrainians, without exception, have the appropriate level of media literacy. And we hope that this initiative will be an effective tool for Ukrainians in the fight against fakes, — noted acting Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine Rostislav Karandeev.

Fake calculator: how to use

Web resource Fake calculator works around the clock for free and without registration. It will also be able to be used by Ukrainians living in temporarily occupied territories.

Using the tool is very simple. The platform offers a set of questions, divided into five thematic blocks, for a detailed analysis of a news article:

1. Go to the website www.fakecheck.in.ua and click the Start button.

2.We select answers to 5 questions (the main signs of “fakeness” information message), which are built into the site.

3. After the answers, the system will automatically determine whether the news is true or fake.

Based on the answers, the calculator estimates the probability of the submitted material being true. The whole process takes just a few minutes.

– We created this tool not only informative, but also educational, because it demonstrates to Ukrainians what criteria are true news and what are the characteristics of fake news. Thus, after a certain period of time using this portal, users will be able to independently and easily distinguish truth from fakes. We expect that more than 100 thousand people will use it in the near future, — explained the executive director of the Association of Innovative and Digital Education, coordinator of the Network of Ukrainian Educational Hubs Maria Boguslav.

This tool was developed within the framework of the All-Ukrainian Information Security Project, which, in addition to the Fake Calculator, also contains:

  • multimedia educational advanced training course in the international format SCORM Media Literacy, which is already freely available to all Ukrainians;
  • webinars on media literacy for specific target audiences (teachers, youth, journalists, government officials, representatives of public organizations and Ukrainians living abroad);
  • trainings for the most active project participants, which will take place in Kyiv, Khmelnitsky, Ternopil and Lutsk during the summer.

All listed events are free.
