A concentrated syrup for drinks with a dangerous component was brought to Ukraine. It contains too much dye E 124, which is bad for health.
A dangerous product was found on the counter of a store in Kyiv. This was reported by the Main Directorate of the State Food and Consumer Service in the Ternopil region.
Details of the incident
The agency said it received notification through the RASFF Food and Feed Rapid Alert System. The letter was dated January 26, 2023.
In a concentrated drink from France, produced by GEORGES MONIN, brought to one of the capital's stores, the content of dye E 124 (Ponceau 4 R) was exceeded.
Why this dye is dangerous
Help.Food additive E 124 (Ponso 4R) is a dye of synthetic origin, having a scarlet color. Additive E 124 is widely used in the confectionery and food industries. However, in the USA, Finland, Norway and some other countries, the dye E 124 is included in the list of banned substances as a carcinogen that can provoke the development of cancer.
In addition, the E 124 additive is a strong allergen and can cause anaphylactic shock or an asthma attack in asthmatics and people with aversion to aspirin. It also leads to increased hyperactivity in children.
What to do if you notice this product on the shelves
The Main Directorate of the State Food and Consumer Service in the Ternopil region called on the entrepreneurs of the region to inform in case of receipt of this product and immediately withdraw it from circulation in accordance with Article 20 of the Law of Ukraine “On the Basic Principles and Requirements for Safety and Quality of Food Products”.
Market operators are obliged to confiscate and/or recall food products in circulation in cases prescribed by law, if it is established that these products may have a harmful effect on human health and notify in writing about the detected non-compliance within no more than two working days . the competent authority (the Main Directorate of the State Food and Consumer Service in the Ternopil region), which is provided for by part 3 of article 20 of this Law, the message says.
