The Office of the Prosecutor General has opened criminal proceedings against the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada from the “Servant of the People” Alexei Kovalev. He is suspected of collaborative activities, since he is now in the occupied Kherson region and does not participate in the national resistance to Russian aggression.

This information was reported by the Ukrainian News publication, citing a law enforcement source.

The prosecutor general has registered the criminal proceedings, the source said.

It is noted that the case was opened under Article 111-1 of the Criminal Code. The maximum sanction under this article provides for a sentence of life imprisonment. And the minimum one does not provide for prison, but entails deprivation of the right to hold certain positions for a period of 10 to 15 years.

According to media reports, the interlocutor did not specify who would investigate the case of Alexei Kovalev.

Earlier it was reported that Aleksei Kovalev was expelled from the Servant of the People faction.

The reaction of the faction:

  • It was previously reported that Aleksey Kovalev was expelled from the Servant of the People faction . “He communicates with the Russian military, who do not take any action against him. He does not participate in the national resistance to Russian aggression and occupation,” the faction's deputies said in a statement.

Reaction of the deputies:

  • “Against this background, Kovalev's behavior is incompatible neither with the title of people's deputy of Ukraine, nor even with membership in the Servant of the People faction,” the deputies noted.
