9 units left: what important functions does the damaged Voronezh-M radar perform?

Ukrainian UAV flew a record 1800 kilometers and attacked the Voronezh-M radar station in Russian Orsk. The device performs not only tracking and detection of intercontinental ballistic missile launches, but also other important functions.

About this Channel 24said military-political observer of the Information Resistance group Alexander Kovalenko, noting that the attack on Voronezh-M was not of tactical or operational-tactical significance, but of strategic importance. There are only 9 such stations left in Russia.

“Voronezh-M” is a unique object

The military-political observer explained that at the moment the Voronezh-M station serves as a gunner. It is synchronized with the electronic warfare system “Tobol”, which is located in the Kaliningrad region.

“Tobol” is the most powerful radar station in Russia, which can jam GPS communications in Poland and satellites Starlink in Ukraine, which has happened repeatedly.

Also, electronic warfare is directly involved in suppressing signals for guidance of high-precision projectiles, for example Excalibur, GLSDB and JDAM, in the M142 HIMARS installation, but there is nuance.

In order for Tobol to work, guidance is needed, and this function is performed by the Voronezh-M radar complexes, which help select a location for suppression. That is, damage to the station is significant.

There are 10 units in total, and now we can say that there are already 9. Disablement is not just show that we can do it. This value is not even at the tactical or operational-tactical level, these are strategic strikes,” emphasized Alexander Kovalenko.

The whole world saw that an unknown flying object could fly into Russian airspace, bypass electronic warfare systems and hit a unique weapon.

Although the Voronezh-M can detect the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Russians are unlikely to be able to shoot it down. After all, even a fairly large drone that has flown 1800 kilometers cannot be destroyed.

What is known about the attack on the Russian radar station in Orsk

  • A Ukrainian drone attacked a Russian radar station in the city of Orsk on May 26. According to Channel 24 sources, the operation was carried out by the Main Intelligence Directorate.
  • “Voronezh-M” is capable of detecting targets at a distance of up to 6 thousand kilometers and simultaneously monitoring up to 500 objects. Such a system controlled the airspace from the Taklamakan Desert in China to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The Planet Labs satellite recorded the consequences of this attack. The image from May 27 shows that dark spots appeared on the territory of the radar station that were not there before – probably traces of a fire as a result of a UAV hit. The resolution of the photo does not allow us to assess the degree of possible damage to the Russian station.
