The Portuguese people almost unanimously support Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Portugal is ready to share its experience of gaining EU membership with Ukraine.

Ukraine counts on Portugal's support in obtaining candidate status

This was stated by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference with Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, Channel 24 reports. The head of state said that he had long and substantive discussions with Costa about Ukraine's European integration.

According to Zelensky, the Portuguese people almost unanimously support Ukraine's membership in the European Union. In particular, according to the president, 87% of the Portuguese are in favor of Ukraine's accession to the EU.

We are very grateful to the Portuguese people for such support,” he said.

Zelensky said he was counting on Portugal's support at the meeting of the European Council in June, when the issue of granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU accession will be considered.

Portugal will support Ukraine based on its own experience

In turn, the Portuguese Prime Minister noted Ukraine's clear choice in favor of Europe. He said that Portugal is waiting with great hopes for the report of the European Commission on Ukraine's prospects for EU membership.

Costa assured that Portugal would provide support to Ukraine, given its own experience of membership in the Council of Europe. According to him, a technical group and Deputy Head of the Office of the President Igor Zhovkva are scheduled to visit Portugal.

Costa said that the technical group will deal with the details of supporting Ukraine on its way to the EU.

Ukraine has begun EU accession: what is known

  • On February 28, President Zelensky signed an application for EU membership, after which the European Parliament approved it.
  • In March, the EU summit supported the European future of Ukraine and called The European Commission to prepare an opinion on the readiness of our state to obtain the status of a candidate for EU membership.
  • In mid-April, Ukraine submitted the first part of the questionnaire to the European Commission. On May 9, the President showed the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the second part of the questionnaire.
  • It is expected that in June the EU summit will discuss Ukraine's application for EU membership. Obtaining this status will open the negotiation process between Ukraine and the EU regarding accession to the European Union.
