Another sad page in the history of modern Ukraine. On June 14, 2014, Russian invaders shot down a Ukrainian Il-76 aircraft near the Lugansk airport.
Forty paratroopers of the 25th separate Dnepropetrovsk airborne brigade were on board. Also killed 9 crew members. They were servicemen of the 25th Guards Military Transport Aviation Brigade from Melitopol.
Luhansk airport was a strategic facility
Recall that militants seized the Lugansk aircraft repair plant on June 6th. Since then, there has been a threat that they will also be armed with aviation. It was already known that aircraft were prepared in the temporarily occupied Crimea. They already had the image of the flags of the “army of Novorossiya” painted on them.
Therefore, it was very important for our military to prevent the capture of the Luhansk airport as well. If this could be achieved, then the infidels would have significantly outnumbered the forces.
Ukrainian paratroopers held the airport
Our military from the 80th airborne brigade courageously held the airport in Lugansk. At the same time, it should be understood that its surroundings were already in the zone of control of the militants. So the military command made an important decision. It is necessary to strengthen the defenders of the airport in order to cut off Luhansk from the Russian border.
For this and they planned to transfer paratroopers from the 25th Dnepropetrovsk brigade there. Note that on the night of June 13, the plane could not land. He took off from Chuguev, but did not deliver the military to the airport. And all because the diesel generator stopped working. It was he who illuminated the runway. Unfortunately, the headlights of the cars were not enough for the plane to land safely. So the attempt was repeated already in the morning.
IL-76 exploded in the air
It is known that on June 13, with an interval of 10 minutes, three Il76MD transport aircraft took off from Melitopol. On board were paratroopers from the 25th brigade. All of them flew to the Lugansk airport. Each aircraft had a standard content. We are talking about 40 paratroopers, 3 BMD vehicles, as well as ammunition and food.

The first plane landed successfully at the airport and they began to unload it. The next aircraft was descending. Crew commander Alexander Bely was just performing anti-aircraft maneuvers.
But, unfortunately, at 00:51 on June 14, the plane, at an altitude of 200 meters, caused a double blow with MANPADS.Then at least one missile hit the plane, causing it to explode in the air. The wreckage of the plane fell 6.6 kilometers from the runway. They were discovered near the village of Krasnoye.
Note that the damage to the Il-76 was the largest simultaneous loss since the beginning of the ATO and the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the period of independence of Ukraine. All 49 crew members who were military men died on board .

As a result of the attack, 49 Ukrainian servicemen were killed/Photo ArmyINFORM Dmitry Mimrikov, the crew commander of the first aircraft, canceled the landing of the third aircraft, which was led by Alexander Pasichenko. He returned first to the base, and soon flew to Melitopol.
The plane was shot down from the Igla MANPADS
The positions of militants were found not far from the airport in Lugansk. There, the terrorists left three launch tubes 9P39-1 from the Igla MANPADS. It is interesting that two of them were used by the enemy, and the third was faulty. Evidence of a Russian trace in this catastrophe also remained there. The militants scattered tins of canned food, which were produced by Orelprodukt CJSC, which also operates in the city of Mtsensk, in Russia.
