Outgoing Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has sharply criticized Vladimir Putin for killing innocent people in Ukraine. This is the first open condemnation of Putin by a Filipino leader.
Earlier, Duterte has repeatedly stated that the Russian leader is his friend and idol. However, in the third month of a full-scale war, he decided to revise his own statements. During a public speech on the evening of May 23, the President of the Philippines condemned Putin for the term “special military operation”, and also stressed that the events in Ukraine are a full-scale war against a “sovereign state”.
In addition, Duterte blamed the three-month war in rising oil prices. This, he said, affected the economies of many countries, including the Philippines.Duterte, who is widely criticized for violating human rights and mass executions in the country without trial, stressed that one cannot compare his policies and Putin's actions.
Many say that we are Killer Putin. I told you Filipinos a long time ago that I do kill. But I kill criminals, I am not children and old people,” Duterte said.
He added that he and Putin live in two different worlds.
Duterte, who is resigning on June 30, urged Putin to stop shelling residential areas and allow innocent civilians to evacuate safely. He emphasized that he was leaving the post of leader without understanding how to solve the problems provoked by the war launched by Russia.
