EU may agree on new sanctions against Russia soon/Getty Images
Europe continues to impose sanctions against Russia against the backdrop of armed aggression in Ukraine. As it became known, the EU may not impose an oil embargo.
The fact is that the ban on Russian oil imports is a technical topic. Therefore, the EU may not reach agreement on an oil embargo at the EU Council summit next week. This was reported by correspondent Rikard Jozwiak.
The oil embargo may not be approved at the EU summit
According to him, the likelihood that EU ambassadors will reach a full agreement on a package of sanctions against Russia at the next summit is not very high.
It is possible that the package is “split” and everything but the oil embargo is agreed or even ideas like a tax on oil imports and a ban on resale in the EU, he wrote.
Oil embargo agreement could be concluded within weeks
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hopes that a decision on an embargo on Russian oil will be agreed in the near future.
According to her, Europe is working hard on this. They intend to make sure that Putin cannot find workarounds. After all, it may turn out that they will then buy the same Russian oil, but from someone else and at a higher price.
Note! Earlier, the EU already thought about whether to postpone the oil embargo . This is necessary in order to continue imposing the rest of the proposed sanctions if Hungary cannot be persuaded to support the embargo.
In addition, Europe wants to force Russia to pay part of the money needed to restore Ukraine.
Recall that the Russian embargo oil should be included in the sixth package of European sanctions against Russia. However, most likely, this will not happen, since there are certain problems in this matter.
