Spring flood destroyed or damaged tens of thousands of Russian homes in the Orenburg region. The Russian authorities promised compensation for lost housing, but they are in no hurry to pay the money, and sometimes even refuse to help their citizens.

Russian authorities, which stuck in a bloody war in Ukraine cannot cope with its own citizens. Russian media report that residents of the Orenburg region have been waiting for two months for promised payments for destroyed or damaged housing, but receiving them has not been so easy.

Lost your home? Your problems

Almost two months after the flooding, many Russians still cannot receive payments: according to the latest data from the “authorities” of the region, more than 187 thousand applications for compensation out of 574 thousand submitted were rejected. But even after receiving all the payments, the owners suffer material losses, because often the compensation does not fully cover the cost of the house or repairs.

Many of those who cannot receive compensation have just built house and were already doing the interior decoration and were planning to move into a new house soon. In most such cases, Russian authorities refuse compensation to their citizens. Local authorities explain the refusals by saying that people have applied again, or are not entitled to a refund at all.

The authorities of the aggressor country offer their citizens one-time payments in the amount of 10–100 thousand rubles for disrupted living conditions, flooding or loss of property. However, Russians can only add up to 10 lost items to the list.

In addition, even if Russians have the right to compensation for housing, then one-time compensation or financial assistance for the loss of essential property will not cover all expenses. For many owners, this money is not able to cover their investments in major repairs or lost housing.

“The rich” with a second home do not have rights to compensation

The same citizens of the “great and powerful” who own a second home do not have the right to compensation at all. For example, if parents bought an apartment for their children, they will not receive compensation for the destroyed house. The government that Russians voted for has finally shown them its true colors.

Russians whose houses were destroyed by the flood even turned to their “leader” Vladimir Putin to allow compensation to be paid to the owners of their second homes. He, nevertheless, allowed it. But with a little clarification. Putin instructed owners of second homes or owners of shares to pay compensation if the area of the second home does not exceed 18 square meters. At the same time, Putin demands that most of the orders be fulfilled before June 1 – that is, the authorities were given about 10 days to carry out the order.

In addition, the Russian authorities responsible for paying compensation to all delay the process in every possible way. The paperwork has become so widespread that with every visit to government agencies, Russians are being chased for more and more certificates, while they have been refusing payments for the second month.

Flood in Russia: how it was

  • Residents of Orsk gathered for rallies. They demanded that their compensation be increased.
  • Meanwhile, the director of the company that was responsible for the construction of the dam blamed rodents for the tragedy. They say it was they who gnawed holes in the dam.
  • On April 8, 2024, residents of Orsk gathered on Komsomolskaya Square, even recorded an appeal to their president and chanted “Putin, help.” At the same time, the police tried to disperse the crowd.
  • Recently, Russians from flooded cities have been arriving en masse to the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk region. They are resettled in abandoned houses and, moreover, given “monetary compensation” for resettlement.
