On Wednesday, DC Attorney Carl Racine said he had brought Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg as a defendant in a user data breach case. This investigation is linked to the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
According to Mr. Racine, the prosecutor's office in the course of the investigation concluded that Mr. Zuckerberg was consciously and actively involved in making decisions that led to the massive collection of data from users of the social network by Cambridge Analytica. In accordance with local laws, this allows individuals to be attracted as defendants in cases related to violations committed by companies. Facebook has already called these accusations “baseless.”
Recall that the scandal erupted in 2018, when it became known that Cambridge Analytica, a company specializing in political psychometrics and working with the campaign headquarters of Donald Trump, collected personal information from more than 80 million Facebook users to develop an algorithm for analyzing the political preferences of voters. In 2019, the US authorities imposed a record $ 5 billion fine on Facebook in this case.
