The main issue of the European Council meeting in Brussels and the EU-Western Balkans summit will be the situation in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited to the meeting of the European Council, which will take place on December 19. The Ukrainian leader is being asked to share his views on how Europe can best support Ukraine at this EU summit.

This is stated in a statement by European Council President Antonio Scienza, the text of which was published on Saturday, December 7, on the European Council website.

“We must support Ukraine as long as necessary and do everything possible to stop the Russian invasion and ensure that international law prevails. The December meeting of the European Council is an important occasion to send Ukraine a single and unambiguous message of support, support for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace,” he wrote.

According to him, the main issue of the European Council meeting in Brussels and the EU-Western Balkans summit, which will take place the day before, on December 18, will be the situation in Ukraine.

Koshta also informed the EU leaders that the European Council meeting will begin on December 19 “at exactly 10.30 with our traditional exchange of views with the President of the European Parliament, followed by a discussion with President Zelenskyy.”

“We will then hold a debate among ourselves on Ukraine, where we will take stock of the situation and discuss the best way to fulfill our commitments to the Ukrainian people,” he said.

Recall that on Saturday, December 7, a trilateral meeting between French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President-elect Donald Trump took place in Paris.
