President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy discussed Nord Stream 2 and the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian border during a video conference with members of the US Congress. This is stated in the statement of the Republican Senator from the state of Ohio Rob Portman, which is quoted by TASS.

According to the congressman, the Ukrainian leader strongly opposed the launch of the gas pipeline, and also expressed gratitude to Washington for military assistance.

“Today we had the opportunity to hear directly from President Zelenskiy about the ongoing build-up of Russian troops along the Ukrainian-Russian border and express our strong solidarity with the people and the democratically elected government of Ukraine,” Portman added.

The senator indicated that the United States should increase the number of defensive weapons of destruction that it sends to Kiev. He noted that there was a discussion of a ceasefire in Donbass with the mediation of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the possibility of establishing a diplomatic dialogue on security in Ukraine.

According to the congressman, Zelensky stressed that any negotiations on the future of the country should take place in the presence of its representatives. Portman has promised to continue calls for the administration of US President Joe Biden to impose sanctions on Nord Stream 2.

Earlier it became known that Ukraine has developed a plan for further legal steps to prevent the launch of Nord Stream 2. This was announced by the head of Naftogaz of Ukraine Yuriy Vitrenko. He said that Kiev is making every effort to oppose the launch of the gas pipeline. Vitrenko is sure that, among other things, the actions of the Ukrainian side helped to postpone the completion of the pipeline by more than a year.
