President Volodymyr Zelensky decided to award the title of Hero of Ukraine to Vitaliy Skakun, a Ukrainian marine who stopped the enemy at the cost of his own life.
The head of state stated this in his address.
According to Zelensky, a sapper from the 35th Separate Marine Brigade, at the cost of his own life, blew up the Genichesk automobile bridge in order to stop a convoy of Russian vehicles heading from the occupied Crimea.
– I have decided to posthumously award the title of Hero of Ukraine to Skakun Vitaliy Vladimirovich, a sapper of the 35th Separate Marine Brigade. At the cost of his life, he blew up the bridge. Glory to those who defend Ukraine today! You are heroes,” the president said.
Vitaly Skakun was born on August 19, 1996 in the city of Berezhany, Ternopil region. The Marine is survived by his mother, grandmother and older sister.
