Zelensky and Biden had a telephone conversation: what they discussed

by alex

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky discussed the situation on the battlefield with his counterpart from the United States Joe Biden.

The Ukrainian leader announced this in his Telegram channel on February 17.

— At the Munich Security Conference, I spoke by phone with US President Joseph Biden. We discussed the current situation on the battlefield. I am glad that I can count on the full support of the American President. We also believe in the wise decision of the US Congress, — wrote Zelensky.

He added that support for Ukraine — this is support for democracy and freedom.

Support for Ukraine in the US Congress

The “wise decision”, which Vladimir Zelensky mentioned following a conversation with his American colleague, concerns an aid package worth more than $60 billion, which has already been successfully voted in the Senate of the US Congress. However, the next step should be a vote in the House of Representatives of Congress, and only then — signature of the head of the White House, Joe Biden. It was at the second stage, namely in the House of Representatives, that the Ukraine aid bill got stuck.

Some Republican politicians from the House of Representatives who support the 45th President of the United States, Republican Donald Trump, have repeatedly made critical or even anti-Ukrainian statements. The problem is also that the House of Representatives itself is headed by the pro-Trumpist politician Mike Johnson, on whom it depends whether the lower house of the US Congress will consider a bill to help Ukraine and other American allies.

Johnson's party members have already stated that they will vote to remove him from his post as Speaker of the House of Representatives if he introduces a bill with support for Ukraine.

At the same time, there is another procedure on Capitol Hill, according to which a package of support for Ukraine is in the House of Representatives. To do this, Democratic congressmen, who represent the minority in the House, must find like-minded Republicans to help them bring the bill to a vote. However, as pointed out by American specialized media specializing in the functioning of Congress, the presentation of a package with additional funding for Ukraine and other allies of the United States may not take place before the end of February.

It is also noteworthy that the House of Representatives announced a temporary break in the work of the lower house of parliament, which will last until February 28.
