Zalando no longer cares about customer gender

At Zalando, customers can now register without specifying their gender. In addition, the online shop does without gender-specific pronouns.

At Zalando, customers no longer have to indicate what gender they are. Instead, the fashion preference can be selected – i.e. women's or men's fashion or both. With this, the fashion retailer wants to ensure an inclusive shopping experience.

Zalando has also introduced gender-sensitive language. That is why customers are no longer addressed with gender-specific pronouns such as Mr or Mrs. Recently, customers have only been written to by name, as the company writes in its diversity and inclusion report.

So that all customers feel represented at Zalando, the models should also be more diverse. This means that dresses are shown in all sizes, including plus size. Beauty products are now available in all skin tones.

To this end, partnerships were increasingly entered into with brands that are run by minorities. The online retailer plans to add 70 more fashion brands run by black people to its range by 2022.

The fashion giant also wants to ensure more diversity internally: Zalando is investing five million euros to increase the proportion of women in technology teams to at least 40 percent by 2023. Because at the moment just a fifth of the tech teams are female.

The company also wants to achieve a balanced gender ratio at the six top management levels. The proportion of women on the Supervisory Board is already over 50 percent. To this end, Zalando wants to actively counter the so-called gender pay gap and promote equal pay for equal work.
