Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova spoke about the sadomasochistic punishment of the European Union (EU) for Russia. So she commented in her Telegram channel on the EU's demand from the Russian Federation of 290 billion euros in the framework of the dispute in the World Trade Organization (WTO).
“Now we know how much the European Union has estimated the stupidity and lack of independence of its own political elites. Stupidity, because import substitution was a response to EU sanctions against Russia. Brussels told for a long time that our country was “severely punished”. She recalled how US President Joe Biden said in 2014 that EU countries agreed to sanctions against Russia only “under strong pressure from Washington,” which was due to the US's desire to inflict as much damage on the Russian economy as possible. According to her, Biden also noted that European countries were not ready to impose sanctions against Russia in connection with the events in Ukraine, they did not want to impose them.
Earlier, the EU demanded from Russia almost 300 billion euros for the import substitution policy. As they say in Europe, Russia “illegally discriminated” European goods for such an amount. Later, the Ministry of Economic Development denied information that the EU is seeking compensation in a dispute at the World Trade Organization (WTO). According to the ministry, the EU estimates the Russian procurement market at 290 billion euros, not the damage caused by the EU.
