Maria Zakharova

The anti-Chechen sanctions imposed by the UK on Thursday are based on baseless accusations of human rights violations, and the Russian state has the right to respond to London. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, her words were published on the department's website on Saturday, December 12.

“We regard this baseless decision as a clear demonstration of the unwillingness of the British authorities to abandon their confrontational course towards Russia. Undoubtedly, this politically biased demarche will negatively affect Russian-British interstate relations, ”Zakharova wrote.

She also earlier called the grounds for the US sanctions imposed against the entourage of the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov as far-fetched.

On December 10, the United States simultaneously with Great Britain imposed sanctions against Kadyrov, companies associated with him and people from his entourage. The US Treasury has expanded the so-called global list of the Magnitsky Act due to “violations of human rights.” The sanctions included the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, the Akhmat football club and the mixed martial arts club of the same name, the Akhmat absolute championship, Chechen Mineral Waters and Megastroyinvest promotion companies.

Former head of police of the city of Argun Ayub Kataev and Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of the republic Apty Alaudinov were included in the British sanctions list. Separately, as responsible for torture and other crimes against representatives of sexual minorities, there is a special rapid response unit “Terek”.
