Video hosting YouTube will begin testing a store-on-the-couch feature that will allow viewers to shop for products directly from live broadcasts. The pilot project starts on November 15th. YouTube will host the YouTube Holiday Stream and Shop, a shopping week selling items from Walmart, Samsung and Verizon. Earlier research by the company showed that 89% of users trust the products advertised on the platform.
The new feature will add a trash can icon in the lower left corner of the screen. By clicking on it, the viewer will be able to view the catalog of goods from the video and buy the things they like. In July 2021, the company tested the new function for a small audience, and now they have decided to expand it. The company said that over time, the categories of goods will increase, the platform will begin to cooperate with a large number of companies.
The feature allows YouTube to compete with both startups and competitors, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok Pinterest, Amazon, and Snapchat, which have already added a regular shopping or video shopping feature. For example, Facebook launched Live Shopping Fridays in May to test online shopping. So far, at these events from Facebook, you can buy cosmetics and clothes.
Earlier, the chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, suggested that “nationally oriented patriotic business” not place ads on YouTube. Matvienko believes that the video platform may “begin to behave differently” “when the ruble seriously hits its pocket.”
