Igor Samunenkov, a 12-year-old boy from Kiev, won the Superfinal of the Youth Grand Prix in Chess of the Ukrainian Chess Federation

The young grandmaster defeated the record holder from the United States.

Ukrainian chess player Igor Samunenkov won a sensational victory in the youth Grand Prix super final among athletes under the age of 12.

This tournament was the final one in the cycle of competitions in rapid among cadets and youths this season. Among about three thousand participants, six of the best from each age category were selected for the super final.

The favorite of the open competition in the U12 category was 12-year-old American Abgimanyu Mishra, who this year broke the record of Sergei Karjakin, becoming the youngest grandmaster in history of sports.

The first day, when the 12-year-old Ukrainian beat Mishra in the first match, 1.5 – 0.5, became defining. After games with all opponents, both players scored 6.5 points, but in the end it was the Ukrainian who took the upper hand: thanks to the result in a face-to-face meeting.

Igor Samunenkov won the adult rapid championship of Ukraine this year. In 2021, the guy received the title of FIDE master.

Samunenkov is already preparing for the World Rapid and Blitz Championship among adults, where he will be a young participant. The competition will be held on December 25-31 in Warsaw.

After the whole world was captured by the pandemic in 2020, 2021 became an outlet. The long-awaited postponed Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as the European Football Championship took place.
