Yandex intends to sell to competing firms the services of its unmanned rovers – courier robots. But this will happen after the IT giant scales the direction. Tigran Khudaverdyan, Managing Director of Yandex, told Forbes about this. Earlier it became known that the company's rovers began delivering food to students on the main campus of one of the American universities.
According to Khudaverdyan, now Yandex Self-Driving Group produces about 100 rovers per month, and each operator can monitor 10 devices simultaneously. Yandex will think about selling unmanned delivery services to other companies, when one operator will be able to track 100 rovers at once, the top manager added. However, so far, competitors have not shown interest in courier robots from the IT giant. Khudaverdyan also explained why rovers can only be sold as a service. According to him, no one wants to be involved in servicing devices, charging them, changing wheels for them, etc.
About the rover
The company launched the Yandex.Rover project in 2019. The purpose of the robot is to transport small loads. Then abhvf called the rover the little brother of their self-driving car.
Since April 2020, the robot has begun transporting documents and parcels between buildings in Skolkovo. In August 2021, Yandex, together with the American food delivery service Grubhub, began delivering food on the main campus of Ohio State University in Columbus. Yandex rovers will bring orders to students and teachers from local cafes and restaurants – every day and in any weather.
In early September, the company announced that it had begun testing an unmanned taxi in one of Moscow's districts. Persons over 18 years of age who have completed a short questionnaire can participate in the tests.
