Analysts from Yandex together with experts from the Institute of the Russian Language. V.V. Vinogradov compiled a list of dialect words from different regions of Russia (RBC has it).

To do this, experts analyzed materials and comments that users published on the Yandex.Zen website. Scientists of the Institute of the Russian Language have selected, in their opinion, the most interesting of the discovered words. The experts prepared their research for the Day of the Russian Language – June 6.

Examples of such words in Moscow and the Moscow region are “edalnya”, meaning a catering establishment, “cheloveinik”, meaning a large apartment building, “corner” – a pavilion, a point of sale or a stand in a store, etc., as well as “spit” – to experience or express extreme dissatisfaction.

In St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, as examples, experts chose “badlon” (turtleneck), the word “curb” to designate a curb, “way” – a secondary specialized educational institution, and “khabarik” – this is the name of a cigarette butt.

Among regionalisms in other subjects: “mantulit” is a popular analogue of the word “work” in the Belgorod region, in the same place, to call something porridge or a mishmash, the word “kesya-month” is used, and the verb is used as a substitute for the word “outwit” “Swing”.

In the Krasnodar Territory, when they mean that something needs to be done very urgently, they say “urgently, faintly”, basil is called “regan”, and instead of “losing” they can say “screw up.”

The ability to think reasonably in the Volgograd region is called kukunder (kukunder went – the roof went), and the headboard of a bed or sofa is called a ridge, while instead of the word “hit”, they can say “sniff”.

In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the word “burn” is used to replace the word “spend”, and “vidovka” is a name for a place in the mountains from where a beautiful view opens up. Instead of “spoil” there they can say “overwork”, and “mechanic” is called a manual transmission.

Moreover, some words immediately cover a wide area. Thus, the word “brakusha” is used to describe poachers in the Astrakhan and Volgograd regions and the Kamchatka Territory.

“Curb” as an analogue of a curb and “khabarik” instead of a cigarette butt are used in St. Petersburg, Karelia and the Novgorod region. In the Kemerovo, Novosibirsk and Omsk regions, as well as in the Altai Territory, the word “karalka” denotes baked goods or sausage in the form of a ring or half ring.

The word “swing” as a synonym for “deceive” is used in several regions of central Russia at once – Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Lipetsk and Oryol regions.

Analysts have also identified regional synonyms. For example, a game of catch-up in different regions can be called “catch-up”, “tag” or “bloopers”, eraser – “eraser” or “washer”, trash can – “trough”, “keskoy”, “fluff” or “kagat” , and instead of “work” they can say “hoof”, “crush”, “fume” or “mantulate”.

In December 2020, the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) invited Russians to choose the three main words of the past year. The winners were “coronavirus”, which was named by 61% of respondents and “amendments to the Constitution” (29%). The third place was taken by three at once – “self-isolation”, “distance learning” and “doctors” (23% each).

The most popular words for queries in a search engine, according to Yandex, last year were “quarantine”, “pass” and “constitution”.
