In 2024, off the coast of Sicily, the luxury British yacht Bayesian was caught in a powerful storm and sank. The vessel was raised.

This was reported by Channel 24 with reference to Sky News.

What is known about the tragic sinking of the yacht

The British yacht, which sank in August 2024, has been raised for the first time. Over the past three days, the vessel has been slowly raised from a depth of 50 meters to secure steel slings, straps and special lifting loops under the keel. On Friday, June 20, the upper part of the passenger area, where the cabins were located, became visible above the water.

Captain Nick Sloan, who led the famous operation to raise the Costa Concordia cruise ship in 2014, stressed that the mission would be extremely challenging.

After the first lift, the vessel will be stabilized just above the bottom and double-inspected to ensure all attachment points and rescue lines are in the correct places, he said.

Let us recall that the yacht sank as a result of, presumably, a waterspout that formed during a storm right where the yacht was moored near the village of Porticello. There were 22 people on board: 10 crew members and 12 passengers. 15 people were rescued, one person was found dead, and six more are missing.

Among those missing is 59-year-old British tech magnate Mike Lynch, known as the “British Bill Gates”.
