The Chinese company Xiaomi said that blocking mobile devices in several countries of the world is a temporary measure. It was introduced while the investigation was underway due to frequent cases of smuggling on the black market. Earlier, Xiaomi phone owners complained that they saw only a black screen and a message that the device was not certified for use in this region. Some of the complaints came from Crimea.
“The investigation has achieved significant results, and the affected devices can now be unlocked,” – said a spokesman for the IT corporation.
He added that blocking phones in Cuba, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Sudan and Crimea is not directed against any particular markets.
“According to media reports, the black market has expanded significantly in recent years, and it has become customary for Xiaomi users to buy the company's products in one region and use in another,” the publication emphasized.
It is noted that the situation could threaten the security of user data and consumer rights.
The fact that Xiaomi began to block smartphones in territories where there are sanctions and bans on their export, it became known on September 11. A Cuban citizen who bought a phone during a trip to Russia complained about this. Later, the geography of complaints about “gray” phones expanded.
Earlier, “Secret” wrote that Xiaomi commented on complaints about the blocking of the company's devices on the territory of Crimea. The IT giant said it hadn't received any complaints from the residents of the peninsula.
