Xiaomi smartphones will teach to track earthquakes

by alex

Xiaomi devices already have an earthquake warning function. The company previously reported that it was able to successfully warn users about 35 such events with a magnitude of 4 or more. Now Xiaomi wants its smartphones to learn how to monitor earthquakes in real time.

This technology will not only save the cost of monitoring earthquakes, but will also significantly increase the number of observations, which will make the national tracking network for such events more complete.

This feature will eventually be launched on all Xiaomi smartphones. While users of devices running MIUI 12.5 can independently upgrade to Mobile Phone Manager-Earthquake Early Warning to join a group of volunteers testing the feature.

The technology works like this: if a sensor in the phone detects vibration, the software determines if this is due to an earthquake. If so, information about the event is sent to the national center. Already there, all the data obtained will be analyzed and the final decision will be made on whether to consider the event an earthquake.

Most likely, this feature will not appear on Xiaomi smartphones sold outside of China.
