The worst case for the development of the coronavirus pandemic is the selection of people, says Ancha Baranova, doctor of biological sciences, professor at the School of Systems Biology at George Mason University (USA).
According to her, from the point of view of evolution, the worst thing that can happen is the selection of people. The biologist explained that the most sensitive genotypes will multiply less, and after a few generations, the genetic structure of humanity will become more resistant to infection.
Baranova said that there are options in the human genome that indicate that people can evolve under the influence of some external circumstances. In her opinion, the selection for the virus is even stricter. As an example, the specialist noted that Europeans often do not have genes that produce one of the lambda interferons, while the majority of Africans do.
The biologist believes that this happened due to some ancient coronavirus, which destroyed those who had these interferons, and those who did not have these genes were affected to a lesser extent.
“So the worst thing that can happen this time is not at all terrible, because such cases have already happened. Even without vaccines and drugs, in two or three generations, the genetic structure of humanity will become different. The coronavirus will no longer frolic in it, ”the expert said.
